Rest in Peace
Life Member Nicholas Prioli
It is with an extremely heavy heart and great sadness to inform everyone that we lost one of our family members. Life member, Nicolas A. Prioli.
Nick has been on the squad since 1999 and has been actively riding the ambulance until his passing. From the moment Nick joined, he was an asset. He was a leader, a role model, a friend and an overall great man. Many of our membership looked up to him as someone that we would strive to be after all the years of his service.
On top of actively riding with the first aid squad, Nick was an active member of Jackson Twp Vol Fire Co #1 - Station 55 and served as Safety Officer, treasurer and honorary Chief. We send our continued prayers and condolences to our brothers and sisters at Station 55.
As always, we will stay together to get through this. We will get back on the trucks because that is how Nick would want us to honor him. Nick was not a man that would want us to mourn his loss but rejoice his life. We are less of a squad now that he’s gone but we will continue to keep his legacy alive through all of the stories and memories.
Rest in Peace
Life Member Donald Kunz
Donald W. Kunz, born on July 3, 1947 in Hackensack, NJ to the late Erma (nee Hoch) and Herbert Kunz, passed away suddenly of natural causes on August 3, 2021. He was the fourth child of five brothers and three sisters. Don resided in Lakewood and formerly lived in Island Heights and Howell. Fascinated from an early age with understanding how things work, Don was a problem solver at heart. He directed that passion into multiple successful roles in the building and construction industry, achieving numerous certifications including licensed Master Electrician and member of the Operating Engineers Local 68 from 1980 through to his retirement. His professional accomplishments began by owning his own electrical business, King Electric, from 1968 to 1980. Followed by 20 years at Johnson Controls, Don took on roles such as Senior Facility Engineer at the AT&T data center in Piscataway and most proudly as Chief Engineer supervising the building of the United Airlines maintenance hub in Indianapolis. Don continued in the home building industry as a construction supervisor at K. Hovnanian. After retiring, he served as a consultant to businesses with Applehardt Construction. Don’s endless talents in construction led him to the restoration of two historical homes; the first being in the historic district of Lockerbie, Indianapolis and the second in Island Heights, New Jersey. Following in his family’s tradition of service, Don began his lifelong commitment as a volunteer first responder by joining the Howell Township First Aid and Rescue Squad in 1976 and earning his EMT certification. Through the years Don served in various roles including President, Captain, Lieutenant, Sergeant, Treasurer, Trustee and Cadet Advisor. Upon moving to Island Heights in 2001, he became an active member of the Island Heights First Aid Squad. In addition to saving countless lives and delivering more than a dozen babies, Don donated his time and expertise in the construction and maintenance of their buildings. More than just his service, Don never turned down a request from anyone in need. Whether it was to help diagnose a problem with your heating system, or figuring out how to deliver generators after Hurricane Sandy. While the call of the plectron (emergency alert system) not only led Don to the aid of others, it also led him to the love of his life - ER nurse, Joan Kunz (nee Newhardt). From their first date, not surprisingly a first aid installation dinner, until his passing, they spent just days shy of 29 years of marriage completely devoted to each other. He loved fishing with his brothers on Lake Anna, VA and as avid birdwatchers, he and Joan enjoyed many days at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. No matter how much passion and energy Don put into any of his many endeavors, nothing filled him with more pride and joy than his children and grandchildren. Rest in Peace

We mourn the loss of one of our own Lakewood Township Police Department
Officer Christopher Matlosz End Of Watch: 01-14-11
Officer Christopher Matlosz, 27, was gunned down in a cold-blooded execution-style murder while on patrol. At 1600 hrs, Officer Matlosz was on patrol, making his rounds in a residential development when he came up to a male subject on foot and they began to talk. It was a seemingly friendly exchange from observant witnesses. All of a sudden, with no provocation, this subject took two steps back and opened fire on Officer Matlosz while he was still seated in his vehicle. It happened so fast that Chris never got his weapon unholstered. Christopher was hit three times. The Cop Killer fled the scene on foot. 911 calls came in immediately from citizens who witnessed the exchange and execution. Ofc. Matlosz was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced just thirty minutes later. An all-out manhunt has been ongoing. Though just 27 years old, this Warrior has been Saving, Serving and Protecting the People of New Jersey for many years. Chris began following his calling as a Police Explorer for the Howell Township Police Department. He then joined our organization in 2001 and served until 2004. He obtained his degree in Criminal Justice while working as a Class 2 Special Officer for Freehold Township, Manasquan and Long Branch PDs. In 2004, he went to work for the Englishtown PD where he stayed for two years where he received commendations for his participation in a multi-agency task force that brought down a major drug house. He remained with EPD until settling in with the Lakewood PD on August 14, 2006 where he quickly became a favorite with supervisors for his diligent, unrelenting enthusiasm and go-get-em attitude. His fellow Officers loved working with Chris due to his out-going personality that was infectious. He was not just a 'cop's cop' he was also a 'man's man'. But not just to his brethren either. On many occasions, even the citizens would call or write the Chief about how much they truly appreciated having a man of this caliber out there protecting them. Never backing down from a challenge, his cool head and smart thinking was to be the making of a long, illustrious career and life of a man who knew how to Live As Only A Hero could. May we all learn from him.
With so many lives touched, the heart-ache of this loss is immense. There is no doubt Chris will be missed and certainly not a doubt he will Never Be Forgotten. Christopher leaves behind his Mom, Brother and his beloved fiancé who he was to marry next year. She was by his side when he left us. Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to this young woman and the Matlosz family as well as to all the Men and Women who have had the privilege and pleasure of working side by side this true Hero. Officer Matlosz, may you always know that your family will be looked after. While you patrol the streets of Heaven, may you watch over us all as we carry on in the battle ... in Our Brother's Honor. We Thank You for your Service. Job Well Done. May you rest with some peace right now ... As we take the watch from here. SALUTE!
